Nikki Knows Love

One chilly Friday evening, my mom and I found ourselves sitting in the tiny chairs of Nikki’s elementary school auditorium. We were there to watch Nikki in her class program, a medley of singing, dancing, and general adorable chaos that only a group of seven-year-olds can deliver.

As we waited for the show to begin, Nikki scampered over in her sequined costume, her cheeks pink with excitement. “Mom! Grandma!” she whispered loudly (the kind of “whisper” that could be heard three rows back). “Do you want to see the boys I like?”

Curiosity piqued, we leaned in closer. Nikki, with all the nonchalance of a seasoned matchmaker, pointed across the room to two boys standing near the refreshments table. They were both round-faced, cheerful-looking kids with husky builds and chocolate chip cookies in hand.

“They’re cute, huh?” Nikki asked, her grin as bright as the glitter on her costume.

“They’re adorable,” I agreed, exchanging a look with my mom. But curiosity got the better of me. Trying to tread lightly, I asked, “So, Nikki, why do you like those two instead of say another boy, I randomly pointed at a smaller kid?”

Nikki tilted her head, as if I had just asked why water is wet. She put her hands on her hips and announced with absolute confidence, “Because they always have snacks.”

My mom and I nearly choked trying to stifle our laughter. Nikki, oblivious to our amusement, waved at her snack-bearing crushes like a queen greeting her loyal subjects.

“I mean, what’s not to love?” she added, as if she were explaining the very fundamentals of romance. “Snacks make people happy.”

Later, as the program ended and the kids filed out to greet their families, Nikki introduced us to her snack-savvy suitors. True to form, both boys had pockets full of candy and were more than happy to share.

On the drive home, my mom turned to me and said, “Well, she’s got her priorities straight. A boy who shares snacks is worth keeping.”

We couldn’t argue with Nikki’s logic—love may be complicated, but a boy with snacks? That’s simple and sweet.
